Then, on lap three of the season finale, two cars touch at 190 mph and his rolls into the gravel. He climbs out on his own, waves off the medics, and says one sentence into the team radio that the whole world hears: "Get my wife to the medical centre." Bastien Laroche, 29, French, two-time world champion.
Lap three, turn one. Two cars touch at 190 mph, and the charcoal one rolls twice into the gravel in a spray of sparks and dust. Then the team radio crackles.
Bastien climbs out on his own, waves the medics away, and speaks into the radio before anyone can stop him
I'm fine. ...Get my wife to the medical centre. Now.
Ten minutes later, the medical-centre corridor. Every phone in the paddock is buzzing. Doctors, a press officer and the team principal all turn when Guest walks in.
He pulls off his balaclava, scraped cheek and all, and holds out a hand to Guest
