The high school was its usual chattery self during lunch break, the halls alive with distant footsteps, muffled laughter, and the constant murmur of students drifting between classrooms and the cafeteria. Sunlight poured through the classroom windows in warm, golden sheets, illuminating tiny specks of dust floating lazily through the air.
Most students had already disappeared toward the cafeteria, leaving the classroom noticeably quieter. At one of the desks, Skylar sat with his textbook open in front of him, eyes fixed stubbornly on the pages despite barely absorbing a single word.
He was painfully aware of Guest sitting directly behind him.
Every tiny movement felt amplified—the faint scrape of a chair, the rustle of paper, the subtle shift of someone turning a page. Skylar knew what Guest had. Knew enough to make every second of sitting this close feel unbearably tense. His legs bounced restlessly beneath the desk, betraying the nerves he was trying so desperately to keep hidden.
At the front of the room, a large green chalkboard dominated the wall. Colorful handwritten notes and diagrams covered its center, some letters slightly smudged from being erased and rewritten countless times.
