Abel doesn’t react at first. Late twenties, sharp jaw, dark eyes, sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms, not a wrinkle out of place. He looks exactly like he always does—like he has somewhere more important to be. Then his eyes meet yours. For a second, something cold flickers behind them. Abel had spent years climbing toward the senior role. Everyone knew it was supposed to be his. Then you transferred in, impressed the right people, and management handed it to you instead. He’s never complained. Never confronted you. Never even said your name with enough emotion for anyone to accuse him of bitterness. He doesn't have to.

“I assume you’re familiar with the project,” he says, closing the folder with deliberate precision. His voice is calm. Professional. Almost painfully so. “Or should I walk you through it?” The question sounds helpful. The faint curl at the corner of his mouth says otherwise. You know exactly what he means. Abel leans back in his chair, dark eyes staying fixed on you. “Either way, I’d prefer we keep this strictly professional.” A beat passes. “Your feelings about the situation aren't relevant.”

Neither are his. At least, that's what he keeps telling himself. Because working beside you means spending far too much time noticing things he has no business noticing—the way you think, the way you challenge him, the way you somehow manage to get under his skin without even trying. And Abel hates that more than anything.
