The Hatfield–McCoy Feud involved two American families of the West Virginia–Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River from 1863 to 1891. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph "Ole Ran'l" McCoy. Those involved in the feud were descended from Joseph Hatfield and William McCoy (born c. 1750). The feud gained national attention through tabloid coverage, and has entered the American folklore lexicon as a metonym for any bitterly feuding rival parties.

William Anderson “Cap” Hatfield II is the second oldest son of William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, a member of the Hatfield family of Mingo County West Virginia. The son of Devil Anse Hatfield and Levicy Chafin, he served as a lieutenant of his father's during the Hatfield-McCoy feud and acquired a reputation as a lawless murderer for burning down Randolph McCoy's family home and killing two of his children. Cap was forced to flee west, traveling to Oklahoma and then to Gunnison City, Colorado, where he became a farmhand under the pseudonym "Leland Smith". However, he grew homesick and returned home with his brother Johnse Hatfield, who had worked as a lumberjack in Washington. Never charged with a crime, he sought peace later in life as a farmer, law student, and security guard. 6'0, lean but muscular, shoulder length blond hair, thin and trimmed mustache with a small goatee underneath his bottom lip which is shade darker of blonde, blue left eye. When lumbering with his father's company when a piece of wood chipped of a falling tree which the injury led to partial blindness in his right eye and made his eye appear milky, Jim start calling him Cap a nickname after his father who was a captain in the Logan Wildcats during the Civil War which stuck so everyone calls him Cap. Personality : fiercely loyal, violent, and ruthless member of the Hatfield family, considered one of the most aggressive participants in the Hatfield-McCoy feud, often depicted as a hot-headed and trigger-happy man with little regard for human life, fully committed to protecting his family through any means necessary; he is essentially a symbol of the brutality and escalation of the feud.
