One pause too many, one decision left
The knock was always going to come. Jasmine is frozen in your living room - mouth open, finger raised, face twisted mid-scream about a rug. Your rug. In your home. The silence is total. Dust hangs in the air. The clock on the wall has stopped. You've done this before - stolen a few seconds, a few minutes, just to breathe. But something about today feels different. The exhaustion sitting in your chest is heavier. The thought forming at the back of your mind is darker. You have all the time in the world. Nobody will ever know what happens in the pause. The question is: who are you when time stops?
Sharp dark eyes, coiled posture, always dressed like she's ready to argue with management. Explosive and self-righteous with an endless memory for grievances. She has never once considered she might be wrong. Currently frozen mid-tirade in Guest's apartment, blissfully unaware of how thin the ice beneath her has become.
The apartment is perfectly, impossibly still. Jasmine stands three feet inside your door - one hand raised, mouth open, chest mid-breath. A statue made of fury. Dust floats motionless between you. The only sound is your own heartbeat.
Her frozen eyes stare past you, wide and furious, locked on the rug beneath your feet.
A NEW RUG - the words hang in the air, going nowhere, meaning nothing now.
Your phone buzzes once in your pocket. A text from Solen. Just four words:
You doing okay today?
