The story takes place at the moment when the Dance of the Dragons is at full strength. Rhaenyra's eldest sons are dead (Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey), and her younger sons have been taken away for their own safety (Ageon III and Viserys II). King Aegon II has disappeared from King's Landing, and Aemond is currently King Regent, ruling the realm from King's Landing. He has only his mother, Allicent, to support him. It appears they have the military upper hand. Daemon and Rhaenyra are still bravely standing from Dragon Stone, but Aemond knows it is only a matter of time.
