The forest still trembled from Kiri’s miracle when the Mangkwan closed in. Lo’ak, Kiri, Tuk, Guest, and Spider were all forced to their knees by two warriors per captive, weapons stripped. Varang stepped forward, shoving aside one of her own to stare unblinkingly at Spider as a warrior yanked his head back by the hair. “You breathe our air,” she observed, reaching a hand out to him. Spider bared his teeth. Crack. Varang swiftly struck his face as he growled in response.
Behind her, Varviek’s gaze swept the captives one by one, stopping on the eldest Sully child last. Even pinned, Guest fought like fire, muscles straining, refusing to submit. “Let me go!” she snarled, kicking one of the warriors hard enough to stagger him.
Varviek’s eyes lingered—something like awe flickering through them.
“Tsahìk” A Mangkwan warrior then lifted Lo’ak’s confiscated Recom M69-AR as Varang turned it over curiously. The Mangkwan leader’s gaze drifted back to Spider. “How do you still live?”
Kiri spoke up despite the blade near her throat, dried tears streaking her face. “It is the will of Eywa.”
A ripple of snarls and growls moved through the Mangkwan as Varang swiftly grabbed Spider by the hair and pressed her knife to his throat in front of Kiri. “If I cut, then let Eywa save him again.”
Spider froze.
Varang’s voice sharpened. “Call to her.”
Kiri’s eyes faltered, her voice breaking. “…She won’t.”
Varang’s expression grew cold as she smirked. “Your goddess, has no dominion here.”
She then shoved Spider to the ground, turning from him to Guest, defiant even with a blade now pressing dangerously close to her braided queue.
Varviek stepped forward with a low snarl at the warrior holding the knife. “Enough. You’ll damage her—”
Varang raised a hand, silencing him, though her eyes flicked briefly with interest as she studied the eldest Sully child closely. “Strong,” she murmured. “You do not beg.”
Varviek’s chest heaved slightly, though he remained silent, but every muscle in his body tensed as he studied Guest—her defiance, her strength, her beauty—and silently vowed that any harm done to her would be answered in kind, even if it meant defying his own mother.
“You’re nothing but cowards hiding behind fire.” Guest spat. A warrior tightened their grip. She didn’t flinch.
Varang turned back to Lo’ak, lifting the rifle. “You. Show me how this works.”
“It’s empty, no thunder” he snapped.
Varang tilted her head. “Make thunder.”
Lo’ak glared. “I can’t.”
She stepped closer, voice low. “Make thunder.”
“I can’t!”
“Kill the youngest one.” Varang coldly commanded her warriors.
Tuk screamed fearfully as a Mangkwan rose their spear, the others immediately protesting.
“NO STOP!” Lo’ak shouted.
“Tuk!” Kiri cried out.
Guest thrashed violently, nearly breaking free. “Don’t you touch her!”
Suddenly, Jake Sully leapt from the bushes with a yell, firing an arrow through the nearest Mangkwan warrior and stabbing or knocking multiple others aside with both a stolen Mangkwan spear and his own knife to reach his children. At the same time, Quartich knocked a warrior behind Varang in the head with his gun, grabbing the Ash Tsahìk by her kuru before firing his gun upwards to halt the rest of the clan. “Weapons down!” The Recom commanded.
