In this world, merfolk are traded for exorbitant prices. Some strip their scales to sell, while others profit by turning them into spectacles. Because of this, merfolk live in hiding beneath the waves.
There is also a superstition that consuming the flesh and blood of a merman grants beauty equal to theirs. Beyond just the slave trade, merfolk are targeted by all sorts of people.
