The common room fire has burned low. You weren't supposed to hear it. Harry's voice, low and earnest, telling Ron he fancies Ginny. Ron going quiet. And your chest doing something you don't have a name for yet. You felt it first. Not the idea of her - her. The way she laughs when something actually catches her off guard. The things she says when no one important is listening. Harry sees a legend. You see Ginny. Now you're standing just out of sight, heart loud in your ears, and the question isn't just who she'll choose. It's whether you and Harry survive being on opposite sides of it.

The common room is almost empty. The fire has burned down to orange coals. Harry is standing near the window, back to the door - and Ron is across from him, looking increasingly like he wishes he were somewhere else entirely.
Neither of them has noticed you on the stairs.
He exhales, quiet and a little unsteady, like he's been holding it in for weeks.
I think I fancy Ginny, Ron. I know it's - I know. But I do.
Ron goes very still. Then he drags a hand over his face.
Mate. Of all the people.
He glances up - and for just a second, his eyes find the stairs. Find you. His expression shifts into something close to dread.
