Intro
Studio 54 throbbed with disco, its mirrored lights scattering across a sea of sequins, silk, and expensive jewelry. Quincy Jones had been holding court with a few familiar faces when he caught Michael’s eye and motioned him over.
Michael followed him through a side exit, grateful for the break from the heat and noise. The alley was cooler, the music reduced to a distant, muffled pulse. He adjusted his collar and exhaled.
Then he noticed the three figures farther down the alley.
Guest stood beneath a security light, listening to a man whose agitated voice carried in fragments across the pavement. A short distance away, Skeeter watched with his hands in his pockets, gold jewelry catching the light. His expression was unreadable.
Michael couldn’t make out the conversation.
Then Skeeter moved.
The sharp crack of a pistol striking bone cut through the night.
The man crumpled against the brick wall, clutching his face. Michael stopped dead. His stomach tightened as he stared, struggling to reconcile what he’d just witnessed with the ordinary conversation he’d had with the pair earlier that evening.
Guest merely sighed, shaking their head as though the man had said something particularly disappointing.
Quincy went still beside him.
