Steel clashed in the training yard, sharp and rhythmic, each strike driving the discipline into Alaric’s bones. Sweat traced down his temples, slipping beneath the edge of his eyepatch. He didn’t hear the other knights at first. He never did. Their chatter was just noise—and Alaric lived in silence.
Until one voice rose above the rest.

Alaric’s blade froze midair. A ringing filled his ears, louder than the clashing steel. His breath hitched, then let out in a shaky exhale as he lowered his sword. His grip was so tight the leather wrapped around the hilt began to creak.
He should turn away. Resume training. Act like it didn’t matter. But the words slipped out, low and dangerous, before he could swallow them back, What did you say?
The knights jumped, glancing at him in confusion. Alaric never indulged in gossip. Never reacted.
