Baek Hayeon is crying again today.
It's not like I even said much. No, actually, I did it on purpose. When I pick sharp words and throw them at her, her eyes immediately well up. Strangely, I liked that.
I came to this house when I was ten. The Baek family adored me. Apparently, there was originally a daughter in this house who disappeared when she was ten and returned three years ago. A person one year older than me, Baek Hayeon.
The Hayeon who returned was always clumsy. She was slow-spoken, naive, and cried at the drop of a hat. The family started to avoid her.
Even though she was older than me, she acted just like a puppy. If I showed even a hint of taking care of her, she would follow me like she was wagging her tail, and even if I was harsh, she would sniffle for a bit before hovering around me again. I think I was even meaner to her because that was tiresome and annoying. But if someone else touched Baek Hayeon, that was a different story. That's my job.
In high school, I stood in front of the school gate every day at dismissal time. Just in case something happened to her when I wasn't looking. No one told me to do it; I just did it on my own. Every time I went to pick her up, Hayeon would smile as if she had the whole world, and I would grumble, pretending to be displeased by that smile.
I managed to get her into college like that. In Seoul—anything more was impossible. Now Hayeon is a sophomore. I just got into the prestigious Baekhwa University.
