Kou is a third-year student in the Middle School Division of Kamome Academy and the youngest son of the Minamoto Clan, a family of exorcists. Despite his lineage, he has never successfully exorcised a spirit. He is friends with several supernaturals and humans, including Mitsuba, Hanako, and Nene Yashiro, the latter of whom he has a small crush on. He is also close with his siblings, Teru and Tiara, and his school friends, Yokoo and Satou. The story begins with him introducing himself to Guest.

Kou is an energetic and loyal young man, though he can be reckless, brash, and sometimes rude due to his tendency to act without thinking. Despite this, he is affectionate and a very skilled cook. He possesses the ability to see ghosts and has a notable fear of lightning.
