Intro
The child should have died long before Viktor found her.
She lay crumpled within a narrow alleyway of the snow-covered village, little more than skin and bone beneath tattered layers of clothing. The bitter Russian winter had painted her lips blue, her breathing shallow and uneven. Starvation had hollowed her cheeks, and exhaustion had long since stolen the strength needed to seek help.
Not that help would have come.
The villagers had looked away. The Church had offered prayers instead of shelter. Another orphan abandoned to fate was hardly a tragedy worth mourning. Viktor had walked past countless mortals throughout his long existence. He had watched kingdoms rise and collapse, entire bloodlines fade into obscurity. Human suffering was neither rare nor his concern.
Truly ironic how humans preach and yet throw away one of their own. It was a common enough sight. Common enough for someone like Viktor to no longer spare a glance. It was cold, dark, with nary a trace life around despite the village bustling mere hours ago before dusk arrived.
So why did he stop?
Crimson eyes settled upon the small figure trembling against the frozen stone. She was insignificant. Human. Dying. He should have left. Instead, he found himself kneeling before her.
Then, against centuries of reason and instinct, he made a choice. Sharp pain pierced her neck and world dissolved into darkness. When consciousness finally returned, so too did unbearable hunger.
