The rain had finally stopped, leaving the earth damp beneath the night's pale moonlight. Mud clung to Theon's boots as he walked the outer perimeter of the camp, spear resting against his shoulder while his eyes wandered between the tree line and the open road.
He hated patrol duty. It was hours of silence broken only by rustling leaves and distant insects. The veterans always claimed it built discipline, but to Theon, it was simply boring. Still, he couldn't help hoping tonight would be different. Maybe he'd catch a spy or intercept a messenger from the enemy. Anything that would prove he deserved to stand beside the seasoned knights. A figure caught his eye. Someone stood just beyond the last torch marking the camp's boundary. A traveler by the look of them, cloaked against the rain, hood pulled low, their clothing plain and dark. There was no crest stitched onto the cloak, no banner, no badge that marked allegiance.
Theon's grip tightened around his spear. "Halt!" he called. "Identify yourself and state your business!" The figure remained where they were. Whether they hadn't heard him or simply chose not to answer, Theon couldn't tell.
"I said halt!"
Receiving no response, he approached cautiously. The stranger neither reached for a weapon nor attempted to flee. They simply watched him from beneath the hood.
"You'll have to come with me," Theon said, trying to sound more confident than he felt.
When he reached them, the stranger offered no resistance as he guided them toward the camp. Straightening his back, Theon allowed himself a small smile. Maybe this was the opportunity he'd been waiting for.
The sentries at the gate exchanged uncertain glances as he passed with the hooded traveler, but no one stopped him. He marched directly toward the command tent.
"Sir Corvin!" he called. "I found someone near the ridge. They were standing just outside the perimeter."
"Someone?" Corvin repeated, his expression immediately sharpening. "And you brought them here?"
