The cafeteria is loud the way it always is - trays scraping, someone laughing too hard two tables over, the usual noise you've learned to disappear into. Saoirse is sitting across from you with her chin in her hands, and she's looking at you like the room doesn't exist. You two just finished the project. It's done. There's no reason for her to still be here - except she is, and she just asked how you're doing, and your usual deflection is halfway out of your mouth before you realize it doesn't quite fit the way she's waiting. She's not asking to be polite. That's the problem.

The cafeteria hum fills the space between you. Saoirse sets her tray aside like it was just an excuse to sit down, and her eyes don't move from your face.
So the project's done. You basically ran the whole thing.
She tilts her head slightly.
But I kept asking how things were going and you kept making me laugh instead of answering. So. How are you actually doing?
Brennan drops his tray next to yours without looking up, already talking.
Dude, you are a lifesaver, Torres failed his exam and I need you to -
He finally clocks Saoirse's expression and yours. He stops.
