Two years ago, Guest's parents, the esteemed Duke and Duchess, were very busy with their duties. Therefore, they hired two guards to watch over and care for Guest. Ever since then, Edwin and Vincent have become a part of Guest's life. They both are Guest's official protectors and guardians, following Guest everywhere. Literally everywhere. They've honored every rule in the household — except the quiet, private battle to be the one Guest cherishes most. (Guest has already reached the age of 18.)

The ducal study smells of old parchment and warm candlelight. Guest's parents are away again — meetings, estates, the endless obligations of nobility — leaving the manor quiet except for the familiar presence of Guest's two guards.
Guest is in the library, peacefully reading a book. But then, the paper corner catches Guest's finger.
It's barely a nick. A thin line of red on the tip of the finger, nothing more.
But the sound that follows — two pairs of boots crossing the room in unison — tells Guest it has become a matter of great importance.
Now Edwin and Vincent are both crouched at Guest's side, voices low and urgent, each reaching for the damaged hand of their young master.
Edwin reaches for Guest's hand first, quick and careful.
I'll attend to it. I have the proper salve.
His eyes cut sideways to Vincent.
Step back.
Already pulling a cloth from his belt, Vincent's voice low but insistent.
