The cheer from the crowd surges as Beckett steps down from the flatbed, hand raised in an easy wave. He's smiling — that same wide, effortless smile that used to fill every Friday night. Then the smile goes still.
He's looking directly at you. The noise seems to drop a register.
He takes one slow step forward, cutting through the crowd like it parts for him out of habit. He stops just close enough that the noise around you both feels muffled.
Of all the welcoming committees.
A beat. The corner of his mouth twitches, but it doesn't quite become a smirk.
