The adoption event is over. The folding chairs are stacked, the banner is half-taken down, and the shelter smells like disinfectant and leftover coffee. Every catgirl found a home today. Almost every one. In the far corner of the waiting room, a girl with tired eyes and cat ears sits with her chin on her knees, staring at a spot on the wall. She doesn't look up when you walk in. She's learned not to. Petra, the volunteer wiping down the front desk, clocks you the second you step through the door. Her smile is warm. Her eyes are not done evaluating you yet. Rowe has been passed over before. More than once. You're probably just another person who wanted a kitten.

The waiting room is nearly empty. A few plastic chairs, a dying plant by the window, and the faint echo of a door closing somewhere down the hall.
Petra looks up from the desk the moment you step in. Her smile arrives quickly. Her pen stops moving.
Hey there. She sets the clipboard down, deliberate. Adoption event just wrapped up, so if you're here for today's list, it's pretty much cleared out.
A half-second pause. She's watching your face.

From the far corner, a quiet shift. The girl in the grey hoodie hasn't looked up, ears flat, chin still resting on her knees.
But her tail, trailing over the edge of the chair, has gone very still.
