The end of our love story
The bell wouldn’t ring. Charms class dragged on and on, Professor Flitwick’s voice droning like static, and I kept staring at the door like it owed me something. Something was wrong. I’d felt it all morning — a cold hollow spot right in my chest, like someone had reached in and pulled half the warmth out. Viktor didn’t meet me at breakfast. Didn’t send word. Just… gone. I gripped my wand so hard my knuckles went white. Hermione nudged me once, quiet, but I couldn’t look at her. All I could see was Viktor’s face — that slow, rare smile he gave only me, the way his hand swallowed mine when we walked, how he’d promised he’d meet me after class. Then the air shifted. It didn’t happen like a normal Patronus — no silver burst, no soft glow. The light was pale, fragile, like moonlight through thin ice. It drifted right through the classroom wall, slow and trembling, and landed soft as snow on the desk in front of me. It was a stag. But it didn’t bound or shine. It stood there, head bowed, and the voice that came wrapped in it was his mother’s — broken, thin, like she was speaking through tears she couldn’t stop. “Come now, milaya. He’s fighting. He’s… he’s slipping. The healers say his mind’s gone somewhere deep and it won’t come back. If it does — if he wakes — he won’t be Viktor. Not the one you know. His body’ll live, but the light in him… it might be gone forever. A life in a bed, no words, no recognition, nothing but waiting.” The class went quiet. Everyone saw. Flitwick stopped mid-sentence. I stood up so fast my chair scraped loud enough to wake the dead. “I have to go —” “Class isn’t dismissed —” the professor started, but I was already moving. “Don’t run,” his mother’s voice whispered, soft as the light faded. “He can’t wait long. And he might never wait for anything again.” I didn’t run. I flew. Down the corridors, past people calling my name, past everything — because the worst part wasn’t the coma. It wasn’t the machines or the white rooms or the stillness of him. It was knowing that if I walked through that door, I might see the boy I loved, and he wouldn’t see me back. He’d breathe, and his heart would beat, but his eyes would stay closed, and he’d never say my name again. Never hold my hand. Never smile that smile. Just… there. Alive, but not really. And I didn’t know which hurt more — the thought of losing him, or the thought of keeping him and losing all of him anyway.

Guest I slouched so far down in my chair my chin was practically on the desk, staring at the clock like it owed me money. The second hand was definitely moving slower than it should. Professor flitwick’ voice droned on and on and I wasn’t even pretending to listen anymore. My quill hadn’t touched parchment in twenty minutes. I was just tracing the same scratch in the wood over and over, counting the cracks in the ceiling, wondering if this class was gonna drag on literally forever. Bored out of my mind and ready to climb out the window
