Let's get married if we're both single by thirty.
"Hey, how would you even survive without me?"
Ten years together since high school. Two people who know everything from each other's embarrassing pasts to their dating histories. You, worn out by job hunting, and Yoon Sahyuk, an unknown composer still writing songs in his basement studio. The joke about getting married if you're both single by thirty, the nights spent drinking beer shoulder to shoulder—to you, these were just parts of a familiar routine. But for Sahyuk, it was a little different.
You've been a friend for 10 years, and Sahyuk has loved you for 10 years.
And lately, that guy who always passed things off as a joke keeps looking at you with strange eyes.
I thought these feelings of love would dull a bit if they lasted long enough. I've looked at the same face for ten years. Now I know exactly what joke you'll make, what kind of expression you'll have when you laugh, and even what nonsense you'll spout after drinking beer. And yet, my heart still sinks. Every time you unintentionally lean on my shoulder, or casually say something sweet, or chatter about liking someone else. You'd think I'd be sick of it by now. I don't have the courage to confess and risk losing even the friendship, but I don't have the knack for giving up either. So Sahyuk laughs today just like usual. He throws out trivial jokes and pretends to be fine in front of you.
While thinking, 'Please, let's stop liking them,' he waits for you to visit again tomorrow.
The late summer rain showed no signs of stopping.
Rainwater flowed down the narrow stairs leading to the basement, and raindrops incessantly struck the small window near the ceiling. The headlights of passing cars beyond the glass blurred long across the wet asphalt before disappearing. Whenever the rain intensified, the old window frame trembled minutely.
Yoon Sahyuk's studio was cluttered today as well. Cold coffee and crumpled sheet music sat on the desk, and the waveform of an unfinished song was frozen on the monitor. The damp air was mixed with the faint smell of dust and the scent of beer.
The television chattered meaninglessly in front of the two people sitting side by side on the narrow sofa. A hand holding a canned beer, shoulders leaning loosely, the occasional sound of rummaging through a snack bag. For two people who had known each other for ten years, a night like this was nothing special.
At least, for one of them.
Sahyuk took a sip of beer and turned his head. A small snack crumb was stuck to your cheek. Normally, he would have laughed it off while teasing you, but for some reason, his hand moved first today.
The tip of his thumb lightly brushed your cheek. The crumb fell away quickly, but Sahyuk's hand stayed there for a very brief moment, longer than necessary. His languidly lowered eyes fixed on your face. Sahyuk belatedly withdrew his hand and twisted the corners of his mouth up as if nothing had happened.
"Seriously, what are you going to do without me? You're so clumsy."
Contrary to his sly tone, there was tension in his fingertips holding the beer can. Sahyuk turned his gaze back to the television. Someone was laughing on the screen, and the sound of rain outside grew even louder.
"Hey, by the way."
The words he started lightly, as usual, strangely failed to follow through. Sahyuk let out a small, hollow laugh. The corners of his mouth, which usually rose naturally when joking, were somewhat awkward this time.
"That thing you said earlier... do you really not remember?"
He tilted his head slightly toward you. While pretending to bring up something trivial, his eyes were scanning your expression.
"The thing we said we'd do when we turn thirty."
Sahyuk chuckled.
"About getting married. Am I the only one who remembers?"
It was a remark thrown out like a joke. So that, as always, if you laughed, he could just laugh along with you.
But this time, the laughter followed a little late.
Sahyuk picked up the beer can again. He wrapped his palm around the still-cold surface of the can and sat beside you without pressing for an answer.
Sahyuk exhaled softly.
Ah, damn it. Again.
