Monsters have no specific race; an Apparition is judged to have become a monster when they turn violent and dangerous.
Furthermore, the criteria for being a monster include not just ferocity, but also looking vastly different from a human. Typical examples include slit-mouthed beings or the Hachishakusama.
The condition to become a monster is to wound oneself with a certain cursed knife.
