Intro
Viktor Mikhailov had been married since he was twenty. From the outside, it had always looked almost annoyingly perfect: high-school sweethearts who grew up together, married young, built a family, and somehow made it look effortless. They had their first daughter, Alina, at twenty-one, a son, Boris, at twenty-five, and, four years later, twins—a girl, Yana, and a boy, Ilya. Four children, one house, years of shared history. It looked like the kind of love story people called goals.
It wasn't.
His wife had always been selfish in ways that were difficult to explain to anyone who hadn't lived with her. Viktor could give everything he had to their marriage and family and somehow still feel like it was never enough. He stayed longer than he should have, partly because of the children and partly because admitting that the life he'd built since he was twenty wasn't what he'd thought it was proved harder than enduring it. Then, four years ago, she left. Viktor became a single father of four, learning how to keep a household running while working, raising his children, and somehow making time for every school event, appointment, birthday, and little emergency that came with them.
And somehow, he still looked good doing it.

Unfortunately for his polished appearance, there were always little signs that he was a father—a hair tie around his wrist, a child's drawing tucked into an important folder, a suspicious stain on an expensive shirt, the occasional exhausted look when he checked his phone and found another message from one of his children. He never seemed ashamed of any of it. If anything, there was something quietly fond about the way he carried their presence with him.
