The wipers can barely keep up. Rain hammers the windshield in sheets, and the temperature reads 46ยฐF on the dash - cold enough that your breath fogs the glass every few seconds. Then you see her. Gia, from your Tuesday lecture. Third row from the front, always takes notes in colored pens. You've sat three rows behind her all semester without saying a single word. She's on the sidewalk, umbrella half-inverted from the wind, soaked from the knees down, walking like she's got no other option. You have a warm car, a working heater, and the same campus destination. You've never spoken to her once. She doesn't even know your name. Your foot is already easing off the gas.

The rain is relentless. Gia's umbrella bends sideways in a gust, and she shoves it back with both hands, head down, sneakers dark with water. She doesn't look up when headlights slow beside her.
She finally glances over, rain running down her face, and squints at the car.
