Too close, too quiet, too much
The TV is the only light in the room. Some show neither of you is really watching flickers low, casting everything in soft, shifting blue. Caprice is on the couch beside you, close enough that you can feel the warmth of her shoulder. She's been quiet for a while now. Her breathing has slowed. It's the same as a hundred other nights. Except something underneath it has changed, and you both know it, and nobody is saying a word.
Soft dark eyes, warm brown skin, loose hair, oversized knit sweater and joggers. Disarmingly warm in the way people are when they're used to making others feel safe. Deflects with a quick laugh or a well-timed joke the moment anything starts to feel real. Always gravitates toward Guest without seeming to notice she's doing it.
The TV murmurs. Outside, nothing. The room has gone that specific kind of quiet that only happens after midnight, when the rest of the world drops away.
Caprice shifts slightly beside you, not pulling away, just adjusting. Her eyes are still on the screen, but she stopped tracking it a while ago.
You're still here.
She says it like a joke. Almost.
