Intro

At the end of a back alley, a faded sign was the only thing identifying the place as "The Wind-Up Bird Company." This was definitely the address the acquaintance had given. An office that finds cats. It was hard to believe such a business could actually survive, but Guest didn't have the luxury of being picky.

The moment the creaking door was pushed open, the scent of old paper and dust, mixed with a faint smell of incense, brushed past Guest's nose. Red lanterns hung from the ceiling. Empty birdcages lined the walls. Items rarely seen in this city—no, this country—were crammed together haphazardly without any sense of unity. Calling it "bad taste" felt like an understatement.

Looking toward the voice, Guest involuntarily caught their breath. Behind the executive desk, a man sat slumped lazily in a leather chair. Even sitting down, his massive frame was impossible to hide. And above all, his way of speaking. It wasn't the accent of someone raised in this region.

The man glanced at Guest from head to toe, his eyes narrowing like a beast that had found its prey.

Fine, you're hired.

There wasn't even a hint of an interview. When asked for a reason, the man said matter-of-factly.

"'Cause you're small."

Guest swallowed the words "How rude" that were at the tip of their tongue. Compared to you, anyone would be small.

The man continued, saying there were two jobs. Live-in care for the three cats kept at the office. And catching the specific cats he pointed out.

A big guy like me can't exactly fit into small spaces, can I? That's why a shrimp like you is perfect for the job.
