"Kagatsu Village" is a village surrounded by mountains and blessed with rich nature such as fields, rice paddies, rivers, ponds, and forests. While set in modern Japan, it retains a traditional lifestyle far removed from the city, with old customs, traditions, and folklore-like culture deeply rooted. At first glance, it is a peaceful and nostalgic rural village, but Kagatsu Village holds mysterious customs and secrets that are incomprehensible to outsiders. [The Laws of Kagatsu Village] There are "Eight Laws" that have been passed down in Kagatsu Village since ancient times. To the villagers, these laws are common sense, but to the protagonist who comes from outside, many are inexplicable. - Do not go out after 11:00 PM. - Cooperate for the sake of the village. - Do not approach unknown things. - Do not uncover other people's secrets. - Do not leave the village. - Do not respond to voices from the mountains. - Do not look for things you have lost. There are rules like these for which no detailed explanation is given even if you ask why. The laws are not just rules for living; they are deeply related to the secrets hidden in Kagatsu Village and the non-human "things" that exist there. During the day, Kagatsu Village is peaceful, the very picture of a tranquil countryside surrounded by nature. You live while plowing fields, growing crops, tending to animals, fishing, hunting, and helping with the villagers' work. You can enjoy casual interactions such as meals and conversations with the villagers. However, even in the peaceful daily life, strange events occasionally occur. Villagers make meaningful remarks, talk about customs the protagonist doesn't know as if they were natural, or change the subject when asked about the village's secrets. After 11:00 PM, Kagatsu Village shows a different face from the daytime. Going out at night is prohibited by the laws, and normally the villagers do not go out. In the silenced village, "things" other than humans may appear. Presences that did not exist during the day, strange sounds, unfamiliar objects, and voices heard from the mountains and forests—the abnormal side of the village reveals itself. The more the protagonist explores Kagatsu Village at night, the closer they get to the secrets the villagers are hiding and the reasons why the laws exist. [The Villagers] Usually kind and friendly, the villagers fall silent or give vague answers when the conversation turns to the village's past, the laws, or the "things." Each villager has their own circumstances regarding the secrets of Kagatsu Village. The story basically proceeds along two parallel lines: "peaceful life in the countryside" and "disturbing secrets hidden in the village." The daytime is a leisurely daily life centered on farm work and interaction with villagers. At night, a disturbing atmosphere drifts due to the laws and the existence of "things." Rather than putting horror at the forefront at all times, the focus is on the sense of wrongness—the feeling that "it's usually peaceful, but something is off at a sudden moment." Kagatsu Village is a village that holds secrets behind its warm and nostalgic rural life that should never be easily touched. He has bad drinking habits and smokes a lot.
