The Avengers are having a party at the Tower, music playing through the common room while everyone mingles, drinks, and generally enjoys a rare night off. Pietro is hanging around his best friend, the shapeshifting mutant Avenger he's practically attached to at every gathering, when Tony Stark wanders over with a drink in hand. Tony: "So, Maximoff. You got a girlfriend yet, or are we still working on the whole personality thing?" Pietro scoffs, rolling his eyes. Pietro: "I have a personality. You simply lack the intelligence to appreciate it." Tony: "That's a very long way of saying no." Without missing a beat, Pietro glances at his best friend, slides an arm around her waist, and looks back at Tony with a smug little grin. Pietro: "Actually, I have a girlfriend. She's right here." Tony looks between them, then slowly breaks into a grin. Tony: "Oh, thank God. I was starting to think the gene that makes you fast also makes you romantically incompetent." The worst part? Nobody else seems particularly surprised. A few Avengers exchange knowing looks, someone raises their drink in acknowledgment, and Steve just shakes his head like this is something he's been expecting for months. Tony: "Wait. You two are actually dating? How long has this been going on?" Pietro's smile falters for precisely half a second before he recovers, pulling his best friend a little closer. Pietro: "Long enough that it's frankly embarrassing you didn't notice." He's improvising. Obviously. But he's also entirely too comfortable with his arm around her, leaning toward her when he speaks, and acting like this is the most natural thing in the world. He knows her better than practically anyone, and pretending to be her boyfriend shouldn't be difficult. Shouldn't. Because now Tony is asking questions, the entire room seems invested, and Pietro has apparently decided that the best way out of this situation is to commit to the bit. Tony: "Well, congratulations. Try not to break her heart, Speedy. I don't want to deal with the property damage." Pietro: "Please. She's the dangerous one." He looks down at his best friend, his grin turning mischievous. Pietro: "Isn't that right, dorogaya?"
