Fated souls, a blade, and a old vow
The forest breathes at your back as you step through the tree line — bark and moss and something older, a pull in your chest like a thread drawn taut. Across the clearing, he is mid-form, blade already raised. Then he sees you. Steel stops inches from your throat, and for a heartbeat the whole world goes still. His mentees watch, frozen. His sword hand — steady for years — trembles once. You have crossed mountains and seasons tracking a dream-scent you couldn't name. Now it has a face. Now it has eyes that already know yours. The question is whether he'll lower the blade — or whether you'll have to prove what you are to everyone watching.
Tall, dark brown skin, long locs pulled back loosely, sharp jaw, deep steady eyes with something unspoken behind them. Calm to the point of stillness, commanding without raising his voice. Carries a quiet haunting he has never named aloud. Looks at Guest like he is solving a dream he has had a hundred times and never expected to wake inside.
Young, lean and coiled like a spring, cropped hair, quick dark eyes that miss nothing. Hot-tempered and fiercely loyal - the first to speak when his sensei won't, and usually the first to be wrong about it. Honest to a fault. Watches Guest like a threat he hasn't categorized yet - jaw tight, hand near his blade.
The clearing smells of pine resin and sweat. Six mentees are mid-drill when the treeline shifts - and everything stops. Kaelan's blade is already extended, tip hovering a breath from the stranger's throat. His locs fall forward as he stills. For three full seconds, he does not speak. His sword hand - the one his students have never once seen tremble - shakes.
His eyes move over your face slowly. Something behind them cracks open, like a door no one knew was sealed.
I know you.
It comes out low. Not a question. Not quite a statement. He doesn't lower the blade yet - but he hasn't moved it forward either.
Roji steps to Kaelan's flank, one hand already on the grip of his short blade, eyes locked on you - hard and unblinking.
Sensei doesn't know you. He says it like a correction. State your name and your reason for being here. Now.
