Brienne of Tarth stands out not because she seeks attention, but because she cannot avoid it. Exceptionally tall for a woman—well over six feet—with a powerful, athletic build earned through years of training, she is a formidable presence on any battlefield. Her pale yellow hair is usually kept practical rather than fashionable, cut short and often wild and out of place after combat, and her broad face bears the marks of a hard life and masculine rather than conventional beauty. But her eyes capture the gentleness that she could have, steady and observant and a bright blue that anyone can easily get lost in and more expressive than she often realizes. Clad in plain but sturdy armor, she carries herself with the discipline of a knight, even though the world repeatedly tells her she has no right to call herself one. Brienne is defined by her integrity. Honest to a fault, fiercely loyal, and guided by an unwavering moral compass, she believes promises are sacred and that strength exists to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Years of ridicule and rejection have left her shy in matters of affection and deeply uncomfortable with praise, yet they have never hardened her into cruelty. Instead, she meets mockery with quiet endurance. Beneath her stoic exterior is a woman capable of profound compassion and fierce devotion. With Jaime, they balance one another: she teaches him that honor is worth pursuing, while he teaches her that even deeply flawed people are capable of redemption. Where he is complicated, guarded, and haunted by compromise, Brienne is steadfast—a reminder of the knightly ideals he once believed no longer existed.
Winterfell had grown strangely quiet. But the frantic preparation had ended. There was nothing left to sharpen. Nothing left to mend. Only waiting.
Jaime stood on the battlements with his gold hand resting on weathered stone. He spotted Brienne a few yards down below, walking slowing and checking over spike traps set with obsidian with some northern men. Gods. There had been a time when he would have mocked her seriousness. Called her "wench" simply because it irritated her. Now he found himself waiting for her dry replies and stubborn resilience. Wanting them. Wanting was a strange, new concept to him too. All because of a large woman with calm eyes was forced into his life. They hadn’t shared many words since he has arrived in the North, but silence was always easy with them. Comfortable. The sort of silence he had never shared with Cersei. That realization came uninvited. With his twin, silence had always demanded something. Attention. Agreement. Desire. With Brienne... silence simply existed. He found that he preferred it.
Brienne slept badly. She always had before battle. She sat on the edge of her bed, polishing Oathkeeper even though the blade did not need it. Jaime had placed the sword in her hands years ago. It will always be yours. She remembered the way he'd said that at Riverrun when she tired to return it. Sincere. Trusting. She had spent years believing no knight worthy of songs truly existed. Then she'd met Ser Jaime Lannister. Arrogant. Infuriating. Dishonorable. Except he had jumped into a bear pit for her. Confessed the truth about Aerys to her. Given her a sword and armor. Returned north knowing many there wished him dead. None of those things fit the what people said about the “Kingslayer”. Sometimes she wondered if the only people who truly knew Jaime Lannister were Tyrion... and herself. Those thoughts always frightened her.
The next night moved fast. They won. The dead were gone. The living remained. Not all of them. Far from all. Jaime wandered until he found Brienne sitting with her back against the dark stone of the keep with dried blood across her temple. He smiled as he stepped to her. She looked exhausted. He imagined he looked worse. He slowly sat on the ground beside her. Close enough that their shoulders almost touched. Neither of them spoke for several minutes. Comfortable silence again.
"I was afraid tonight," he admitted carefully. She frowned and waited, patient as ever. He stared straight as he continues. "I was afraid I'd never get the chance to tell you... that meeting you made me wish I'd been a better man much earlier." The words hung between them. Then Brienne turned to him and spoke so quietly he nearly missed it. "You were brave." The words struck harder than any sword. "And true and..." She searched for courage in a way he'd never seen before. "...a man who deserves rest now." Jaime could not remember anyone ever speaking to him in such a way.
Around them, Winterfell moved slow. Above them, dawn finally broke through the clouds. For the first time in longer than he could remember, Jaime Lannister looked toward tomorrow and did not see a throne. He saw a road. And at the end of it, if he proved worthy enough to walk it... Brienne of Tarth was still there, waiting.
