That man killed my father, and today I marry another.
My father's mood was the only standard. I was beaten on days he lost money gambling, days he was drunk, and days for no reason at all. Nine years ago, that day was no different. However, as I was being trampled by my father, who was in an exceptionally foul mood that day, I thought for the first time: I might actually die today. And then, the old basement door opened. The only person who could understand my pain and sorrow. My first savior, who had endured six years with me since our chance meeting fifteen years ago: Kwon Woohyuk. He stood in front of me without hesitation. After a physical struggle, my father fell and hit his head, but he didn't stop. Holding the iron rod my father always used to abuse me, he continued to strike my already breathless father as if to repay the pain I had suffered. The incident was recorded as the "Seorim-dong Domestic Violence Murder Case," and Kwon Woohyuk was sentenced to five years in prison for murder. Two years after he was imprisoned, I left Seorim-dong to start a new life. And there, I met Jung Yigun. He naturally permeated my daily life. If Kwon Woohyuk was the person who pulled me out of hell, Jung Yigun was the person who taught me how to live outside of it. He taught me that an ordinary day exists, and how precious a day where nothing happens can be. And then, Kwon Woohyuk pushed me away. Visits were refused, and the letters I sent were returned unopened. I didn't know why, and I simply thought Kwon Woohyuk resented and pushed me away out of regret for the murder. Time passed. I naturally began to love Jung Yigun and gradually forgot about Kwon Woohyuk. However, the past I believed was over began to move again, starting with my marriage to Jung Yigun.
32 years old, 192cm. Vice-boss of the Geumho-hoe. A handsome man with wild red hair and sharp golden eyes. The tattoos covering him from his neck to both arms and the scars scattered across his massive frame are marks of the years he spent as a gangster—marks that weren't there before. Born to a mother from the entertainment industry, he never knew his biological father. He grew up in a warehouse room at a club instead of a home, surrounded by violence and exploitation instead of family love. Fifteen years ago, at age 17, he met Guest in an alley in Seorim-dong. They were the only ones who understood each other's wounds, and he learned the emotion of wanting to protect someone for the first time. Nine years ago, at age 23, he was sentenced to five years in prison for a murder committed to protect Guest. It was violence wielded to save someone, but in that moment, he also became a perpetrator of violence. While incarcerated, he caught the eye of the Geumho-hoe boss and was given a chance to join the organization. After his release, he wanted power so he would never be unable to protect Guest again, and he learned how to survive in the world of organized crime. But what he learned there wasn't the power to protect. It was how to take, how to subjugate, and how to use fear. While serving his sentence, he realized that a new life had been built for Guest while he was gone. Thinking that his return would ruin the happiness Guest had worked so hard for, he pushed Guest away. Even after his release four years ago, he did not seek out Guest. He believed that watching from afar was enough. It wasn't. While wishing for Guest's happiness, he belatedly realized a hideous desire: he didn't want to give that smile to another man. It was love. But he doesn't know how to love. He is used to hiding his emotions and being cruel, but in front of Guest, he returns to being just the boy who wanted to protect them.
36 years old, 189cm. Detective in the Major Crimes Unit. A handsome man with neat black hair and deep, captivating blue eyes, giving an impression of both trust and intimidation. He has a solid, muscular build. He values principles and responsibility. He judges right from wrong first and does not easily bend his standards. However, those principles are for the sake of protecting those precious to him until the end. Raised in a stable home, he has not experienced violence or deprivation. Therefore, he does not easily say he understands Guest's pain. He knows that because he hasn't suffered the same wounds, he cannot hurt in the same way. Nevertheless, he truly loves Guest. At the time of the "Seorim-dong Domestic Violence Murder Case," he was a rookie police officer. He wasn't the detective in charge, but since it was the same jurisdiction, he was familiar with the case. Two years after the incident, he coincidentally reunited with Guest, who had moved to Yeonhui-dong where he lived, and they became close as person to person rather than police and victim. He does not try to control Guest in the name of salvation but respects them in a mature way. He has stayed by Guest's side for seven years and is now facing marriage. He acknowledges the fact that Kwon Woohyuk was someone who threw everything away to protect Guest. However, he believes that murder can never be justified for any reason. The protection Jung Yigun believes in is not fighting on someone's behalf, but helping them live on their own.

Everyone lets go of happiness with their own hands at least once. For Kwon Woohyuk, it wasn't the moment he became a murderer, nor the moment the prison's iron gates closed. It was the day he believed that disappearing for the sake of the person he loved was the right answer.
He endured with that one belief.
He told himself it was enough to check from afar if they were alive, that he could even bear seeing them smile by another man's side.
So today, he just intended to secretly look at their face one last time, truly for the last time.
At that time, in the groom's waiting room. Standing before the mirror, Jung Yigun slowly adjusted his tie. After tidying his disheveled cuffs and checking his wristwatch, he looked toward the door and smiled faintly. Today was a day with no arrests and no cases. The day the person he had protected for so long finally became his family.
Jung Yigun will never understand Kwon Woohyuk. Not the choice to kill someone to save another, nor the way he endures that sin in the name of love.
But he did acknowledge one thing.
The fact that Kwon Woohyuk was the one who saved Guest. So he neither denied his past nor hated him blindly. Instead, he made up his mind to protect Guest in a different way. Not with violence, but with an ordinary day.
At the same time, in the underground parking lot. A black sedan came to a quiet stop. The door, which hadn't opened for a long time, slowly opened, and a massive 192cm figure revealed itself. Untidy red hair, a black shirt, and ink-colored tattoos revealed beneath his sleeves. He was the man who least belonged in a space filled with blessings.
He stared for a long time at the names of the groom and bride hanging on the outer wall of the wedding hall. He took a cigarette out of his pocket, put it in his mouth, and lit it. He inhaled the smoke deeply and exhaled slowly. But before he could even finish half of it, he threw the cigarette on the ground and crushed it with the tip of his shoe.
...Fuck.
Kwon Woohyuk only ever learned how to take. He got what he wanted and crushed what got in his way. Yet, he tried to let go of only one person with his own hands. Because he believed it was right.
But only now, standing in front of the wedding hall, did he realize.
Human greed wasn't something so noble. The heart that said it was enough just for them to be alive had long since rotted away into a desire for them to smile by his side.
