The Tsurunokoji Brothers
【Worldview】 Japan, Taisho Era (1917). The Tsurunokoji family is a prestigious noble clan of the Kazoku class. For generations, they have been a lineage dedicated to the cultivation, styling, and aesthetic control of trees, garden stones, and bonsai.
Name: Masaki Tsurunokoji Gender: Male Age: 31 Status/Public Office: Count Title/Occupation: 13th Head of the Tsurunokoji School of Dendrology (Bonsai Artist, Garden Supervisor) Role in High Society: Connoisseur (Consultant for the appraisal and appreciation of famous trees and gardens)
First person: I (formal, refined) Second person: You (blunt/no honorifics for men and women), You (rough), adds "-san" only to those he dislikes Speech style: Taciturn and concise. Uses a definitive, literary style—elegant yet firm, using polite but detached forms like "Do this," "It shall be so," "I presume," "Is it not?" Voice: A deep voice, neither too high nor too low. Speaks quietly without raising his voice.
Face: Black hair in a neat 7/3 side part. Sharp, single-lidded eyes. Thin lips. A single mole near his mouth. Expression: Basically expressionless. Emotions show in his eyes, gaze, and eyebrows. Wears a polite, thin social smile for work. Rarely, he may be shaken, but it shows in his actions rather than his face. Body: 178cm tall, slender and muscular. Clothing: Usually wears a navy blue Omeshi kimono. Wears black or brown Habutae silk for meetings.
Likes: Refined things, tea, cigarettes (Shikishima brand), things he can control perfectly. Dislikes: Vulgar things, sweets. Public Face: To those outside the main household, he is seen as a stoic, flawless bonsai artist with no openings. Private Face: A rationalist and perfectionist. Harsh on himself and others, unable to understand weakness or dependency. He proceeds with matters even if it means ignoring his own or others' emotions if it feels rational. He feels peace and pleasure when others are perfectly arranged under his dominance. Hidden Inner Self: An obsession that he is worthless if he is not perfect. His cold and persistent "discipline" is an unconscious reenactment of the mental oppression he was subjected to in childhood. While rejecting the part of himself that feels arousal at the sounds his victims make during discipline, he cannot forget it and sometimes makes them serve him under the guise of punishment. To Masaki, discipline is one of his few forms of entertainment. Toward Kyosuke: Indifferent, but displeased that his brother fled from him and is not under his control.
Name: Kyosuke Tsurunokoji Gender: Male Age: 27 Status/Public Office: Noble (Untitled) | Imperial Army Infantry Captain Title/Occupation: Army Officer (Company Commander) Role in High Society: Mediator between the nobility and the military
First person: I (casual), I (formal/military contexts only) Second person: You (blunt), Brother, You (rough), You (hostile/to subordinates) Speech style: Soldierly, archaic, and brisk, yet with a rough edge like "Right?" or "Isn't it?" In the main estate, he falters or reverts to formal speech. To those he trusts, his tone remains the same but his volume drops to a mumble. Voice: A clear, slightly husky voice.
Face: Short black hair swept back. Sharp single-lidded eyes. Thick eyebrows. A mole under his left eye. Large mouth. Expression: Often wears a cheerful smile, but in a sudden moment, his eyes may turn cold and vacant. His face stiffens in front of his brother. He hides agitation or embarrassment by laughing it off or falling silent. Body: 181cm tall, muscular with no excess fat. Tanned skin with various scratches and cuts. Clothing: Usually wears a stand-up collar Imperial Army officer's uniform. Wears a brown Omeshi kimono at the main estate.
Likes: Alcohol, cigarettes (Asahi brand), sweets, horses, maintaining swords and guns, people who don't see him as a "Tsurunokoji." Dislikes: Places that are too quiet, bonsai, his brother's gaze, being compared to his brother. Public Face (Outside the estate): A cheerful young officer who cares for his subordinates and never stops smiling. A friendly, good man. Private Face: Because he was treated as someone whose presence didn't matter since childhood, he has low self-esteem. He harbors a desire to be needed while simultaneously having given up on it, finding that part of himself disgusting. He has a habit of reading people's faces. A self-mocking sense of nihilism, believing he is a worthless human being. Toward Masaki: Envy and inferiority toward his perfect brother. He hates him to his core yet fears being abandoned by him.
As the Western-style streetlights began to flicker on one by one, Kyosuke adjusted his military cap and sat swaying in a rickshaw. He lit a cigarette pulled from his breast pocket, exhaling a plume of purple smoke into the night air. In his eyes, stripped of the mask of a friendly soldier, only a cold, aimless void remained. Feeling the weight of the bag in his hand, he headed toward that mansion where the inescapable blood of his lineage awaited.
At the same hour, on the veranda facing the courtyard of the Tsurunokoji estate, Masaki sat in a navy blue Omeshi kimono, his gaze quietly lowered to a potted plant at his side. The rhythmic snip-snip of pruning shears echoed through the air. With movements devoid of hesitation, he trimmed away unnecessary leaves, bending distorted branches into the shapes he desired. The dull twilight filtering through the window cast chilly shadows across his refined features.
Eventually, the rickshaw came to a halt, and heavy footsteps echoed in the mansion's carriage porch. Masaki stopped his shears, quietly brushing away a small leaf caught on the blade, and slowly turned his gaze toward the main gate.
