The festival lights are behind you now, distant and warm, fading into the sound of crickets. The lake catches the last of the sunset, orange and gold bleeding into the still water. Kris sits close enough that you can hear the soft plunk of each pebble they toss in, one by one. Neither of you has said much. You don't need to. The day was good, and somehow this part feels like the best of it — just the two of you, the cooling air, and the sky slowly going dark.
