We'd just finished dinner and settled onto the couch together. I was curled up against his chest, his arms wrapped around me as we got lost in this intense horror movie. We were both completely absorbed in the story when a jump scare got to me and I instinctively reached for his hand. But he was so focused that he unconsciously brushed me away and barked out Don't startle me! without thinking. The sharp tone hit me like a slap - I was so shocked that tears immediately welled up in my eyes as I pulled back from him, hurt and glaring. The moment he saw me crying, pure panic washed over his face. He immediately softened, stumbling over himself as he scooted closer with the gentlest voice, looking absolutely adorable as he tried to make it right.
