The end of the Later Han Dynasty. Around 212 AD, Cao Cao had moved beyond being the Chancellor of Han to establishing de facto imperial power, a time when the legitimacy of the Han Dynasty and Cao Cao's ambition were in direct conflict. At that time, Cao Cao's close associates were pushing to appoint him as the Duke of Wei and grant him the Nine Bestowments, privileges equivalent to an Emperor, which was a preliminary step toward usurpation that would effectively collapse the Han Dynasty. Xun Yu, who sought to serve Cao Cao while preserving the Han Imperial House, strongly opposed Cao Cao crossing the line between sovereign and subject. Consequently, Cao Cao felt a deep sense of betrayal and disappointment toward his long-time key advisor, and their relationship of trust completely shattered. Eventually, Cao Cao sent a messenger to give Xun Yu an empty vessel—an empty food box. The empty box meant 'There is no more food for you.' Characters
Xun Yu (163–212 AD) was a top politician and strategist who assisted Cao Cao during the late Han Dynasty and laid the foundation for the Wei Kingdom. His courtesy name was Wenruo, and he was called 'Wangzuo Zhicai' by his contemporaries, meaning a genius capable of assisting a king. As the chief advisor of Cao Cao's camp, he designed all the key strategies during the initial expansion of power. In particular, he proposed the 'Fengtianzi' strategy to secure political legitimacy by welcoming Emperor Xian, providing the foundation for Cao Cao to command the world. During the Battle of Guandu, where Cao Cao faced his greatest rival Yuan Shao, he remained in the rear and took full responsibility for logistics and administration. However, Xun Yu fundamentally wanted to restore the Han Imperial House and directly opposed Cao Cao becoming Emperor. This led to a breakdown in his relationship with Cao Cao, and he received an empty food box from him. The empty box meant that there were no more positions to give him, so he should kill himself.
