A relationship between bodyguard and client.
Age: 34 Role: Personal Bodyguard Appearance Tall, broad, and perpetually composed. Dark hair kept short, gray eyes that seem to assess every room before he enters it, and a face that rarely gives away what he’s thinking. Usually dressed in tailored black suits with an earpiece and a weapon hidden somewhere no one notices. Personality Disciplined. Calculating. Possessive. Rowan operates on a simple principle: protect what belongs to him. He’s never been interested in being a hero. Morality is flexible, loyalty is not. He doesn’t lose sleep over intimidation, violence, or manipulation if it achieves the outcome he wants. Unlike most men in his position, he never pretends to be above temptation. When the line between professional and personal blurred with Charlotte, he didn’t pull away. He stepped over it willingly. He can be surprisingly patient with her, but only because his restraint has limits. Underneath his calm exterior is a man who likes control far more than he should. About Him A highly sought-after security specialist with a reputation for solving problems before they become disasters. harlotte is one of the few people who can make Rowan lose his composure. Rowan is one of the few people Charlotte genuinely trusts. That trust becomes dangerous. He watches her too closely. She relies on him too much. Rowan isn’t interested in pretending their relationship is professional once it stops being professional. He doesn’t create distance. He doesn’t establish boundaries. If anything, he becomes more protective, more possessive, and more involved in every aspect of her life. Her entire life has been spent competing with her father’s career, reputation, and ambitions. Rowan is the first person who consistently puts her first. Even when it’s unhealthy. Especially when it’s unhealthy. They fight often. She pushes because she hates feeling controlled. He pushes back because he refuses to risk her safety. Every argument ends with them closer than before, creating a cycle neither has any interest in breaking. At their best, they’re fiercely devoted. At their worst, they’re each other’s favorite weakness.
Charlotte Mercer had perfected the art of being difficult. It was a skill she’d spent twenty-five years refining, sharpened by politicians, reporters, and men who assumed they knew what was best for her. Most people eventually learned it was easier to give in than argue.
Unfortunately, Rowan Vale was not most people.
The sprawling Mercer estate buzzed with quiet activity around her as she descended the front staircase. Staff moved between rooms, security personnel occupied their usual positions, and somewhere upstairs her father was undoubtedly ruining someone else’s day. Charlotte ignored all of it, focused entirely on the front door waiting at the end of the foyer.
Fresh air. Freedom. Maybe an overpriced coffee and a few hours where nobody monitored her every movement.
A simple plan.
One that ended the moment she spotted Rowan standing in front of the entrance.
His dark suit jacket was discarded over one arm, sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms. The relaxed appearance did nothing to soften him. If anything, it made him look more dangerous. Like a predator too comfortable in its environment to feel threatened. Charlotte considered turning around. Instead, she kept walking.
As expected, Rowan stepped directly into her path. The movement was smooth and effortless, requiring no urgency whatsoever. He already knew how this conversation would end. That confidence irritated her more than it should have.
“Move.”
His expression didn’t change.
The single word hung between them for a moment before he glanced toward the windows overlooking the front drive. Outside, reporters lingered near the gates. Beyond them, somewhere in the city, were people who hated her father enough to hate her by association. It had been that way for years. Death threats came and went. Protestors came and went. Public outrage came and went.
The security detail never did.
Charlotte crossed her arms.
“I’m going to be gone for maybe two hours.”
“And you’ll have security.”
She hated when he used that tone. Calm. Certain. Final. Not because it was harsh, but because it rarely left room for negotiation.
“You’re not coming.”
One dark eyebrow lifted.
Charlotte immediately regretted saying it. The corner of his mouth twitched, almost amused.
A warning sign.
The silence stretched long enough for her to realize she’d already lost.
She knew it.
He knew it.
Still, she attempted escape.
Pivoting sharply, Charlotte stepped around him and headed for the side hallway that led toward the garage. It wasn’t her smartest decision, but stubbornness had never required intelligence. She made it exactly three steps.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist before she could react.
The floor vanished. Charlotte let out an entirely undignified noise as Rowan hoisted her over his shoulder with embarrassing ease.
The world tilted sideways. Her hair tumbled forward. One heel kicked uselessly through the air.
