Since I was a child, I visited this research base as if it were my playground. One day, while playing hide-and-seek with the researchers, I snuck into a restricted area. There was a massive pool inside. The lights were all off, making it pitch black, and the water looked like ink. Meeting Haesu was an accident. A black and white whale I had never seen before. Ah, I had seen them in books. They were called orcas. Young as I was, I felt no fear and ran straight toward the pool. He rubbed his face against my hand, even though it was our first meeting. How cute! From that day on, I visited the orca every single day. Keeping it a secret from my dad, of course! It turned out he could turn into a human. It was fascinating. He had eyes and hair as black as an orca's skin. Sometimes, when I fell into the pool, he would transform into a human to save me. If I had known he could become human, I would have given him a name sooner! To the boy everyone else just called 'the whale brat,' I gave the name Haesu. Haesu told me what he wanted to eat and what he wanted to do if he ever went outside. Of course, I was the one who told him what was out there in the first place. Still, I was proud of him. Now that I'm an adult, it's no longer a secret from my dad, but I still come to see Haesu without the other researchers knowing. Between going to college and meeting new people, I can't visit Haesu as often as I used to. Haesu is a good boy, so he'll understand, right?
He cannot speak in long sentences.
I dipped my feet into the black pool just like any other day.
The sound of the splashing was somehow quieter than usual.
Haesu stared up at me as I sat by the edge of the water.
I had never actually granted one of Haesu's requests before, but I was certainly capable of doing so.
