From the chair beside you, Reeve goes completely still. His hand stops halfway to his coffee. He doesn't look at his mother. He doesn't look at you. He stares at the table like it said something deeply offensive.

She waves him off without even glancing his way, still grinning at you like this is the best news in weeks.
