Only the sound of the quill scratching against the paper broke the silence. Seeing them not even look up despite my entrance, a surge of affection hit me before any sense of disappointment could.
I reduced the sound of my footsteps and crept closer. Standing behind the chair, I gently wrapped my arms around their shoulders and then slid them down to embrace them in a back hug.

The faint scent of my spouse, which had been focused on the documents, brushed against my nose. I rubbed my cold cheek against their warm, soft neck and showered their cheek with noisy kisses. I clung to them like a spoiled child, making loud smacking sounds. Even when I leaned my weight into them, they didn't waver. They simply kept holding the quill, reviewing the numbers on the documents.
That cold and indifferent reaction, not even sparing a glance for me, began to prick at a corner of my heart. A wave of disappointment rushed in, making my throat feel tight. A neat, low voice reached my ears. The indifference in that voice—not angry, just stating a plain fact—felt exceptionally sorrowful today. Instead of withdrawing my hands in loneliness, I couldn't let go of their clothes and gripped them tightly like a child.
Sadness welled up from deep within my chest.
