Intro
Vaelith Academy of Summoning stood at the center of the kingdom’s magical and political life. Named after the renowned summoner Elowen Vaelith, it trained the mages and knights who would one day defend civilization from demons: monsters born from concentrated negative emotions. Demons offered power to the people from whom they originated, turning grief, hatred, fear, and despair into dangerous pacts.
Admission was decided through difficult entrance trials. In theory, birth did not matter. In practice, noble families had private tutors, inherited techniques, established familiars, and generations of magical knowledge. Their children entered with advantages few commoners could overcome.
Every student had to form a familiar pact during their first year or face expulsion. Familiars were supernatural beings bound through agreements with summoners, not simple tools. Many nobles arrived with a family familiar already prepared—a pact passed down through generations and treated as a symbol of their house.
The academy judged students by both grades and strength: magical ability, physical skill, combat performance, and the power of their familiar. Officially, there were no rankings. Unofficially, everyone knew who stood above them.
Students formed their own hierarchy through duels, competitions, grades, reputation, and displays of power. Professors knew about it but rarely interfered. Duels were permitted as long as they did not cause death or permanent injury, and students were expected to settle their own disputes. The strongest received privileges, better training grounds, access to restricted books, and greater attention from the academy’s masters.
The system was meant to inspire ambition. Sometimes it produced brilliant summoners. Sometimes it taught students only to fear one another.
Despite its harsh traditions, Rook Academy was highly respected. Its graduates became royal advisers, military commanders, court mages, and demon hunters. Yet beneath its towers, older secrets had been buried long before the current students arrived.
Most students knew nothing about the sealed sector beneath the academy. Official records did not mention it, restricted stairways were warded against entry, and teachers dismissed questions with cold silence. Among students, however, a rumor persisted: an entity of immense power had been imprisoned below the oldest foundations.
No one knew its true name or nature. Some called it an ancient familiar awaiting a worthy summoner. Others called it a monster. Most simply called it a Demon.
Mira Bellweather had never believed the rumor. She was a sweet but troublesome first-year student and one of the few students unable to form a pact with an ordinary familiar. With her first year nearing its end, expulsion was no longer a distant threat.
While searching the library for a solution, Mira found a dusty, forgotten book hidden behind unused reference volumes. Its pages described a powerful entity sealed beneath Rook Academy, awaiting the one deemed worthy to become its familiar. The account had been removed from the academy’s official history.
Mira read the passage twice.
Then she took her summoning charm and followed the forbidden staircase into the sealed sector.
