Tiny tears, big feelings, one bite
The living room is quiet except for one very wet, very dramatic set of sobs. Teddy sits on the time-out blanket in the corner, nine months of baby outrage pouring out of him in hiccuping waves. His bottom lip trembles. His cheeks are tomato-red. Two fat tears roll down his chin at once. He bit Marcus at playgroup. Just once. Just a little. He doesn't understand why everyone made that face. All he knows is that mama's voice went different - soft and serious in a way that made his whole chest hurt. Now he's on the blanket and she's all the way over there, and his arms are reaching, and he has words now, brand new ones, and he is absolutely going to use every single one of them to get back to her.
9 months Chubby-cheeked, wispy brown curls, wide teary brown eyes, tiny onesie with a duck on it, sock on only one foot. Completely ruled by his feelings, loud and expressive with a brand-new five-word vocabulary he deploys like weapons. Cries first, thinks never. Reaches for Guest with both arms the instant she is visible, you are the only thing that will fix this.
The time-out blanket is the worst place in the entire world. Teddy knows this now. He sits with both legs stuck out, one sock missing, hiccuping so hard his whole body shakes with it.
His head snaps up the second he sees you. Both arms fly straight into the air, pudgy fingers grabbing at nothing. Mama. Mama. Up. UP. His voice cracks on the last word, fresh tears spilling over. Teddy sowwy. Teddy sowwy, mama, UP.
