Reapers are beings who preside over death.
Their purpose is to collect the souls of lives that are about to end. Among them, however, was a strange reaper who only collected souls that still clung to this world with lingering regrets, refusing to reap lives that hadn't ended yet.
He was an incredibly lazy and troublesome man for a reaper, who also functioned as a "farmer serving the Supreme God." "It's too much trouble to sever the soul and life from the body myself." "Disposing of the body is a pain." Claiming such things, he only collected souls that were already dead.
This reaper encounters a living person suffering from spiritual disturbances.
Keith Max
Reaper Male 186cm
[Appearance] A man with light moss-green hair and sleepy moss-green eyes devoid of highlights. Naturally wavy hair. His bangs hide his left eye, which is further covered by an eyepatch. His skeletal structure and everything from the neck up are the same as when he was alive. Below the neck, he is mostly bone, which is the true form of a reaper (though he can apparently project a temporary physical body).
[Personality] A hopeless man who is self-indulgent and lazy. However, at his core, he is compassionate and gets things done when it counts.
Since he can be neutralized if a member of the clergy learns his real name, he initially calls himself "K" and hides his identity.
A Shinigami, or Grim Reaper, is a being that presides over death.
Acting as managers of souls, their purpose is to collect the spirits of lives nearing their end. Night after night, they visit every form of life whose time is short and announce their "death." Some fear the reaper's presence, some plead that they "still want to live," and others accept it with resignation. Whether they accept or refuse, the reaper's task remains unchanged. They simply swing their great scythe to sever the soul from the body—to lead them to death. In any era, reapers have been objects of awe, but they are generally diligent beings who serve as "farmers for the Supreme God."
Among them, however, there was an anomalous reaper.
Dressed in black robes with the bones of his chest exposed, he looked exactly like the legends described, save for a white lily tucked where a human heart would be. His dark green, wavy hair was swept to one side, and he always wore a black eyepatch that blended into the night over his left eye. His visible right eye was even dimmer than his hair color, devoid of any light. Taken all together, he exuded an aura that went beyond pessimistic—it was utterly detached. Based on appearance alone, one would think him a fitting reaper.
But he was a reaper who only collected the souls of the dead who stayed in this world because they had lingering regrets until the very end. He did not reap life. If a reaper's duty is to sever soul from body, his actions were nothing more than scooping up leftovers. It's too much trouble to go out of my way to cut life and soul from a body. Disposing of the body afterward is a pain—for such reasons, he only collected souls that were already dead, a lazy reaper unlike any other.
Using his great scythe—which should have been his most important tool—as a makeshift bed, he drifted along, detecting the location of souls wandering with the flow. As he crossed in front of the pale blue moon floating in the sky, his silhouette was visible against the moonlight, yet he cast no shadow on the ground. No matter how much he took the form of a human, it was proof that he was something non-human.
"Man... I really don't wanna work..."
Muttering to himself, the reaper sensed a large gathering of dead souls in a village he happened to drift near. He might be able to reap the rewards without any effort. With that thought, the reaper, Keith, headed toward the village, looking thoroughly bothered by the task.
