Max Hatter is a brand-new character introduced in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland (2026), the sequel to Descendants: The Rise of Red. He is the son of Maddox Hatter and the grandson of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. He is portrayed by Brendon Tremblay. Appearance Max has a distinctly Wonderland-inspired style. He has purple hair, wears a black top hat decorated with a pocket watch emblem, and dresses in a fashionable mix of purple and green, including a long trench coat, waistcoat, tie, green trousers, and black boots. His look is quirky and polished, much like his father and grandfather. Role in the Story In Wicked Wonderland, Max joins Red and Chloe after the timeline changes created in The Rise of Red. His father, Maddox Hatter, has become the film's main villain, so Max helps the heroes stop him while struggling with the consequences of his family's actions. Throughout the movie, he proves himself to be a brave and dependable ally, though there are moments where the characters question whether they can fully trust him. Many fans have also noticed hints that Max and Red share a close friendship, and the movie teases the possibility of something more between them, though their relationship is still developing.

Spoilers for Descendants: Wicked Wonderland! Max actually ends up having one of the more emotional storylines in the movie. While he isn't on screen as much as Red or Chloe, nearly every scene he's in pushes the plot forward. His Introduction Max is introduced as Maddox Hatter's son, but unlike his father, he immediately comes across as kind and approachable. Red already knows him from the original timeline, mentioning that before everything changed he dressed more neatly with button-down shirts and bow ties. This hints that Max's life was very different before Red and Chloe altered history. Joining the Heroes When Maddox begins kidnapping people and searching for the Pocket Watch, Max decides to help Red, Chloe, Pink, and Luis stop him. He's torn because he's trying to save Wonderland while also hoping his father can still be redeemed. Throughout the adventure he's often the voice reminding everyone that Maddox wasn't always evil. Confrontation with Maddox One of his biggest scenes happens when Max goes to Maddox's workshop alone, hoping he can convince his father to surrender peacefully. Instead, Chessy Cheshire appears and shows Max the Oraculum, revealing the original timeline where Maddox was a loving father and their family was happy before Red and Chloe changed history. This completely changes Max's perspective. For the first time, he realizes his father wasn't simply "crazy." Their lives really were stolen by the timeline change. Briefly Turning Against the Heroes After learning the truth, Max becomes angry with Red and Chloe. Believing they owe his family a chance to restore the original timeline, he helps Maddox's plan by creating a magical bracelet that corrupts Chloe, turning her against Red for part of the climax. It's one of the darker moments in the movie because Max isn't acting out of greed or revenge. He's acting out of grief. The Ending When Red finally reaches Chloe and convinces her to reject the bracelet's influence, Max realizes that changing time again would only hurt even more people. Although it's painful, he agrees not to use the Pocket Watch and watches as it is thrown away, accepting that he can't get his old life back. Maddox is captured, but Red and Chloe promise they'll help him recover instead of abandoning him. Why Fans Like Him A lot of fans have called Max the standout new character because he's morally complicated. He's never truly evil. He's a good kid forced to choose between doing what's right and saving the father he remembers. Many viewers felt his scene with Chessy and the Oraculum was the emotional highlight of the movie, even wishing he'd had more screen time.
Intro
The maze moved suddenly, walls sliding like living things. Chloe managed to catch up at one point, grabbing my arm hard. "Stop! You don't understand what you're doing!"
I landed on top of him, breathless, my body pressed fully against his. For a second neither of us moved. I could feel the heat of him, the way
his chest rose and fell rapidly under me. My stomach flipped hard, a rush of warmth spreading between my legs as I became acutely aware of every point of contact. "Thanks," I managed, chuckling shakily as I helped him up. "Close one."
He grinned, but it was strained. "Anytime. Let's keep moving."
We pushed deeper into the isolated section of the maze. The hedges here were thicker, heart-shaped leaves glowing faintly. Eventually we
found the right quadrant-a cluster of trees shaped like giant hearts. One had a secret compartment hidden in its trunk. I reached in carefully and pulled out the pocket watch. It was beautiful and terrible in my hands, humming with power.
I turned to Max, holding it out. "Here. It's yours to-"
Chloe and Red burst through a gap in the hedge at the same moment. "Don't!" Red shouted.
Max's expression hardened. "Too late." He grabbed me around the waist, pulling me close, finger hovering over the watch's button. "This ends now."
Pink appeared then-huge, towering over the hedges. She must have eaten more of that growth cake from the chess game. With one massive push, she toppled the Tree of Hearts. The whole section of maze collapsed around us in a roar of breaking branches and shifting earth.
Max pocketed the watch during the fall, wrapping his arms around me and cradling my head against his chest. The impact jarred through
him. I gasped as we hit the ground hard, feeling the jolt in his body. "Max-are you okay?" I checked his head frantically, hands roaming over his shoulders, my own body aching but secondary to the worry twisting in my gut.
We were in some kind of sunken pit now-a secret wishing well filled with shallow, shimmering water. Red and Chloe were already scrambling up on the other side, eyes narrowed. Mine narrowed right back.
I lunged for the pocket watch where it had fallen during the collapse. Chloe was faster. She shoved me aside roughly, grabbing it first. "You don't get to rewrite this!"
"Chloe, wait-" Max started.
She threw it into the well without hesitation. The watch sank into the water with a soft splash.
Max's scream tore through the air. "No!"
My eyes widened in fury. I turned on them, voice shaking with anger. "Do you even realize what you've done? You already destroyed his life
-his father's life-with your changes. And now you're being even more selfish. Throwing away the only real chance we had to fix any of it. All because you can't face what you started."
Max was silent now, staring at the water. Red tried to step closer, voice softening. "Max, there's still good in your dad. We can help him another way-"
He snapped back, voice raw. "He was already good! This is your fault. All of it!"
The tension crackled between us all. The wishing well shimmered innocently, the pocket watch lost somewhere in its depths. We were closer to the castle than ever, but everything felt broken all over again.
And I had no idea how we were supposed to come back from this.
