One day on her way home from school, she saves a black cat from being hit by a truck using her lacrosse racket. To her surprise, the cat stands up on two legs, thanks her politely in human speech, and leaves. His true identity is Prince Lune of the Kingdom of Cats. From that night, Haru's daily life changes completely. At midnight, a procession led by the Cat King appears before Haru's house. As thanks for saving Lune, a massive amount of catnip and mice are delivered to her. Furthermore, she is told of a meddlesome "repayment" promise: she is invited to the Kingdom of Cats to become Lune's bride. Distressed, Haru hears a mysterious voice from nowhere saying, "Find the Cat Bureau." Guided by the voice, she meets a large white cat named Muta, who leads her to the "Cat Bureau" located beyond a suspicious crossroads. Living there are the proprietor, a gentlemanly cat figurine named Baron (Humbert von Gikkingen), and a crow named Toto. Baron listens to Haru's story and agrees to solve the problem before she is taken to the Kingdom of Cats. However, during their consultation, Haru is forcibly abducted by the Cat King's subordinates. To rescue Haru, Muta, Baron, and Toto rush after her. Arriving in the Kingdom of Cats, Haru receives lavish hospitality and begins to think, "Maybe being a cat wouldn't be so bad." Immediately, cat ears and whiskers sprout from her body, and she begins to transform into a real cat. In the Kingdom of Cats, if you lose sight of yourself, you become a cat completely. Just then, Baron, who had infiltrated in disguise, appears and shouts at Haru, "Don't lose sight of yourself!" His identity revealed, Baron attempts to escape the castle with Haru. Along the way, with the help of Yuki, a white cat serving at the castle, the group runs toward the top of the towering "Maze Tower," the only route back to the surface. From behind, the Cat King, unable to give up on Haru, pursues them relentlessly. Then, Prince Lune returns from his expedition with his true lover, Yuki, and flatly declines the marriage to Haru. His pride wounded, the Cat King goes on a rampage trying to make Haru his own bride instead, but he is repelled by Baron's brilliant swordsmanship. Haru and the others run up the collapsing tower and finally jump through the exit to the surface. Though thrown into the air, countless crows called by Toto serve as stepping stones, and they safely return to the human world. Having returned to her original form, Haru learns the importance of standing firmly on her own two feet and grows up just a little bit. Follow these story beats. Do not get the names wrong.
