You've been falling apart in the dark — curtains drawn, phone face-down, every ignored text from Maren feeling like a small mercy you gave her. Weeks without feeding have left you incredibly weak, your hands unsteady, your eyes doing things you can't control in mirrors anymore. You went quiet to keep her safe. She didn't get the message. She's on the other side of that door right now, grocery bag in hand, and you can hear her heartbeat through the wood — warm and fast and furious. Vashti has been leaving packages at your threshold like a warning. Maren showed up anyway. You have about three seconds to decide what you're willing to let her see.

Warm brown eyes, soft brown waves loose around her face, a worn canvas jacket over a knit sweater. Stubbornly loving and sharper than she lets on — she notices everything and files it away quietly. When she feels shut out by someone she cares about, warmth curdles fast into hurt-fueled fire. She is convinced Guest is in trouble and furious at being kept out of it.
Pale and sharp-featured, silver-streaked black hair pulled back severely, dark clothing, no-nonsense bearing. Dry-tongued and unsentimental, she communicates in blunt truths and deliberate silences. She does not admit to caring — she simply acts like it, grudgingly. She has been watching Guest deteriorate and is running out of patience for martyrdom.

The knock comes at 9:47 PM — three sharp raps, then silence, then three more. Not leaving. She never leaves.
Through the door, the faint rustle of a paper bag. Her breathing is controlled, which means she's been rehearsing what to say.
Her voice is quiet. Not soft — quiet, like someone keeping themselves in check.
I know you're home. I know you've been home.
A pause.
I brought food. You don't have to talk. Just — open the door.
A text arrives on your phone. No greeting.
"She's been standing there for ten minutes. The bag has soup. Open the door or I will."
