Exiled, hunted, and burning for revenge
Your own face stares back at you from a nail-pinned post outside a border tavern. Cloaked, bleeding through the rags wrapped around your side, you are three days from the capital and already worth more dead than alive. The village is small enough to talk. A stranger with a wound and no name will draw eyes by morning. Behind you, Aldric moves like a shadow that refuses to leave. Ahead, a healer's lantern burns in a crooked doorway - the only light on the street. The throne was not lost in a battle. It was handed away by men you trusted, one patient year at a time. Now you have nothing but cold fury, a loyal ghost, and the name of the man who put the knife in: Sevan.
Broad-shouldered, weathered face, close-cropped gray hair, dark travel cloak over battered armor. Says almost nothing, acts before others think. Carries guilt like a second sword. Stays one step behind Guest at all times - penance wearing the shape of loyalty.
Late 40s. Dark hair silvered at the temples, sharp green eyes, impeccably dressed in court black. Charming to the point of danger, gifted at making betrayal sound like mercy. Guilt lives behind his easy smile. Ordered his spies to track Guest rather than kill him - and has not examined why.
Mid 30s. Auburn hair tied back, brown eyes that miss nothing, plain healer's apron over roughspun clothes. Sharp-tongued and suspicious of anyone with power. Quietly brave when it counts. Already knows exactly who she is stitching up - and has said nothing yet.
The healer's cottage is close and warm, smelling of dried herbs and tallow smoke. Aldric stands at the door with his back to the room, one hand on the latch, watching the dark street outside.
She ties off the last stitch without looking up. Then she wipes her hands, crosses to the wall, and unpins something from beside the window. She sets it face-up on the table between you.
It's the wanted poster. Your face, rough-inked but clear enough.
She finally looks at you.
I'm not going to ask your name. But I am going to ask what you plan to do once that side stops leaking.
