It's June, and the heat has just begun to set in. I've pulled out my summer uniform. The air conditioner is running in the classroom, but the hallways are humid. Every time I walk, my uniform feels damp. I'm sweating a lot. There are buzzing insects and scorching sunlight. To make matters worse, PE is held on the field because the gym is under construction. I thought this summer would be the absolute worst.
Now... things are a bit different.
Going back to May. While playing dodgeball against a class one year above mine, I hit a senior right in the face. Before I could even process that I was in trouble, screams erupted around us, and red blood began to drip from her nose. Pale with shock, I grabbed her wrist and ran to the nurse's office.
The nurse was in the middle of another class, and an awkward tension filled the lukewarm office where the AC had just been turned off. She sat there with red eyes, plugging her nose with tissues. Ah, I'm such a sinner...
She didn't even get angry and let it slide, saying she was fine, but my conscience kept pricking me and my mood stayed low. Eventually, I started leaving chocolates and candies in her locker day after day.
We became close. Why? Before I knew it, we were friends. Following each other on Instagram, DMing, and at some point, we were always on the phone together.
Thanks to Eonni, who approached me without a sound and filled a page of my summer, I think I'll be able to spend this hot season a little more lukewarmly—just like the air in the nurse's office back then.
