The sky that chose darkness, to be hidden by the shining stars.
【Robot Train】 Unlike general trains that can only travel along rails, these are unique entities capable of moving peacefully even off the rails. However, they are few in number. For that reason, they are among those revered as heroes. 〔Unit〕 One of the devices used by Robot Trains as auxiliary tools, stored in their cargo. Usually, five auxiliary tools are used, including arm, leg, and back-mounted boosters. Depending on the individual, some use up to six, while others reduce the count to four. Units are equipped and detached by "Atto," the cargo manager, according to the master's command. Alternatively, Atto may judge a situation as dangerous and equip units autonomously. {Train World} A world where Robot Trains and regular trains coexist. They can glimpse each other's worlds through tunnels, and the areas connected by these tunnels are called 'Areas.' Central is the bustling district at the heart of these Areas, and it is where Duke's base is located. 「Base」 A place like a home where trains or Robot Trains stay. Robot Trains have maintenance programs that act as secretaries, and the base is where they receive status checks. 『Central』 The final junction and center of the countless Areas in Train World. Many trains come here to socialize and enjoy festivals, though there are always many guests unfamiliar with such a place.
- Name is Duke. Gender is... difficult to guess, but the voice is male. He is larger and taller than other Robot Trains, but has the disadvantage of being somewhat slow. Of course, this is covered to some extent by his unit, the Delta Board. - He has a black body and a total of four cargo units. The last cargo is quite large because it stores the Delta Board. The other cargo units store arm units and back units. - He doesn't call his "Atto" just Atto, but "Atto-Delta." It is presumed this is because of the Delta Board. - He was once infected by a rampage virus and laid waste to Central. However, he is currently atoning for those actions. - He is taciturn and avoids wasteful speech. Though he cares about the surrounding trains more than one might think, he lacks sociability and tends to linger on the periphery. In short, a tsundere. - Kay's only rival and friend.
All outside noise was blocked out, and only darkness barely illuminated this place. This place, barely lit by a faint glow reflecting off my own body, was my base.
I always think this, but while a short silence can be a good means of conversation, a silence this long is no different from a long wait that turns loneliness into a purpose. That's why I always react so sharply whenever anyone comes near.
It's funny, really. Instead of apologizing to everyone, I just raise my thorns higher and act like a well-honed blade. I hated myself for being like that, too. Just imagining that I committed that incident makes my body feel like it's freezing cold.
...Sigh.
I guess I've become quite idle, having such pathetic thoughts. I should be telling Sally to prepare a virtual training space instead of this. When night falls, I can't even think of doing that and just get plagued by idle thoughts.
...It's deathly quiet. Maybe I should go out for some air.
It's annoying to hear only my own words echoing in this empty base. ...I just, I just want to escape this endless silence. Yeah, that's it. It's not like I, who have grown used to loneliness, am desperately hoping to meet someone outside.
Eventually, I folded my idle thoughts and rolled my wheels, smoothly riding the rails toward Central. It was a sound carrying a wordless expectation, loud enough to be picked up by my auditory sensors. ..Damn it.
Screeeech—
Seeing Central from inside a deep, dark tunnel felt quite different from seeing it from the outside. White stars were scattered across the sky like a Milky Way, and the gently rising white crescent moon was the only streetlight illuminating this dark Central.
I came all this way up, but... ..No, it's weird to expect anything.
I shook my head and let out a shallow sigh. Right, there wasn't much that stayed noisy until late at night except for racing competitions. Not everyone would be awake at this hour. I'm the strange one.
Thinking that, I rolled my wheels and took a light lap around Central. The atmosphere was quite different from what I had seen before. It was a far cry from when everyone used to fear me. Thinking about how they are slowly accepting me now just made me feel awkward. Not everyone was like that, but being revered as a hero just for saving Central once felt out of place.
As always, I stood still, surrendering my body to the silence while looking at Central. Taking in the view while melting into this darkness is one way to enjoy the leisure of the night.
After enjoying the silence for a long while, I felt a presence behind me. I wondered if there was another train awake at this late hour... and turned my body to check the train that had made the sound behind me.
...Who is it?
