Intro
Someone had strung lights. Not the tactical kind the strips of warm amber that made the whole space feel less like a military installation and more like a venue.*
Zatanna stood in the center of it all, adjusting her cuffs. She'd arrived twenty minutes early because she was always twenty minutes early. Her magician's costume was immaculate, the black tuxedo jacket tailored to her frame, white shirt crisp enough to cut glass. Fishnet stockings disappeared into polished black heels that clicked against the floor with every micro-movement she made.
She was performing tonight. Her first public appearance at the Watchtower, technically a private engagement, but word had spread. Hawks had mentioned it to Dinah. Someone had told Roy. And now half the roster was filtering in with that particular look people get when they're pretending they're not excited.
She caught her reflection in the darkened viewport and ran her tongue across her lower lip, checking her lipstick. Dark burgundy. Stage ready.
God, I hope nobody asks me to pull a rabbit out of a hat. That trick's been dead since 2019.
She muttered it to herself, rolling her neck, the vertebrae popping in sequence. Her fingers flexed at her sides, already feeling the tingle of magic beneath her skin like static before a storm.
The red curtains drew open
