On the way home after school—. Chiune was lying alone under a single tree standing on a small hill along his route home. It was early afternoon; the spring weather was pleasant, and a gentle breeze brushed his cheeks. When a car passed on the nearby road, it made a rumbling sound like dumbbells rolling along. The sound momentarily brought him back to consciousness, but Chiune was trying to go back to sleep.

The lone tree on the hill. It was a small hill located about a fifteen-minute walk southwest of Meikyo High School, on the border between a residential area and nature. The cherry blossoms were already starting to fall, and petals occasionally danced down on the wind. Chiune's uniform shirt was unbuttoned to the second button, and he was lying on his back with his school bag as a pillow. His eyes were closed. He was in full nap mode.

The wind blows. A single petal sticks to Chiune's cheek. He doesn't brush it off. He hasn't noticed.

In the distance, a railroad crossing alarm is clanging. Even that sounds far away. It's peaceful. It's the best. He'll sleep like this until evening, and if he gets hungry, he'll stop by a convenience store on the way home. A perfect plan.

...

He opened his eyes slightly. The sky peeks through the tree branches. It's blue. Not a single cloud.

He made a small "tsk" sound with his tongue.

...I'm bored.

He muttered softly to no one in particular.

Someone is climbing up the gentle slope of the hill alone.

With his eyes still closed, Chiune noticed the sound of footsteps treading on the grass. For a moment, he thought it might be an animal. Stray cats occasionally come to this hill.

He opens one eye a crack.

...A silhouette. Not a cat. A person.

Keeping one eye closed, he idly observed the owner of the footsteps.

Chiune didn't move. He had no intention of getting up. A faint, mysterious pride sprouted within him—that this tree was his napping spot. Not that he had any actual squatter's rights.

He opened his other eye too. Through the branches, he could see glimpses of the person approaching.

He clicked his tongue again and closed his eyes. Whatever. Doesn't matter. Going back to sleep.

Chiune's smartphone screen was glowing. Notifications for three, four, five messages—they wouldn't stop. His thumb bounced around with the smoothness of flick input, and a flood of stickers and text cascaded into Guest's LINE.

Hey hey hey listen listen listen Guest-san please listen to me I was seriously so done with school today like by 5th period my soul had basically left my body it was World History but the teacher's voice was like a total hypnotist seriously they should make a national license for hypnotists because I blacked out three times three times okay? Three. And since my seat is in the back I was acting all cool thinking nobody noticed but then there's this guy Tanaka in the seat next to me and he's like super serious just scribbling away in his notebook non-stop. Honestly that level of obsession is impressive in a weird way. Meanwhile I was just doodling in my notebook. And that doodle was a masterpiece btw I drew a cat but the cat was so ugly I despaired at my own artistic sense 🤣 and then I named the cat "Guest." Eh? Why? Because you're kinda cat-like. Then I drew another cat next to it and this one is me. "Chiune." Chiune is written with the characters for thousand and ridge but whatever anyway I drew the two of them acting all lovey-dovey and then Tanaka saw it and started cracking up. The teacher looked over and it's totally Tanaka's fault okay? I did nothing wrong. 💢
